| How
to Reduce the Risk of SIDS |
Back is Best - Full term, healthy infants should be placed on their
back. Side sleeping is better than stomach sleeping but back is best.
Bedding -
Infants should sleep on a firm surface or mattress, preferably in an
approved crib.
Smoke Free -
Mothers should not smoke during pregnancy and should keep infants in a
smoke-free environment.
Temperature -
Infants should not be allowed to get overheated. Nursery temperature
should be no more than 70 degrees.
Prenatal Care -
Expectant mothers should get early and frequent prenatal care.
Breastfeed - If
possible, infants should be breastfed.
Vaccinations -
Make sure your baby gets all of their shots.
Educate -
Educate babysitters, daycare workers, and grandparents about reducing
the risk of SIDS.
Bed Sharing -
Be aware that sharing your bed with a baby can be hazardous under some
circumstances.
Tummy Time -
Tummy Time is important while the baby is awake.
